God has given this church a new name - "The Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations".
God desires to reveal Himself to people and to establish His Kingdom on earth in order to change everybody’s life for the better. But He always starts with small things.
That’s why on February 6, 1994, seven people got together in one apartment in Kiev to worship the Lord and to know His Word. They didn’t even have an idea that they were laying the foundation for one of the biggest churches in Europe.
This was the beginning of the Word of Faith Church, which in ten years would have about 20,000 members and more than one million people receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
On September 12, 1994 the church was officially registered at Kiev City Administration.
God has a big vision for His church: from growing a strong church with thousands of members out of a handful of people who will take the Gospel into all the world (primarily into China and Arab countries) and will make all nations disciples of Jesus Christ, establishing His Kingdom on the Earth.
God found a man with the potential for making this church’s vision a reality. He called Sunday Adelaja from Nigeria to serve Him in Ukraine. Right now Pastor Sunday has an international apostolic ministry, helping plant new Christian churches in Ukraine and other countries as well.
EMBASSY OF GOD CHURCH: INFORMATION FOR MEDITATION
Before we start talking about The Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God Church, let’s analyze the situation and conditions in which it appeared.
In 1994 Ukraine was as an independent state for only 3 years. There were different states that existed on the Ukraine’s territory during many centuries. Tribes living on the territory of Ukraine were parts of different states and had their own cultures and ideologies.
Ukraine was one of the republics of the former Soviet Union and was formed as a state when it came out of the Union. In the year of 1994 it was making first steps in its self-determination. It is important to note that the ideology of Soviet Ukraine as well as the ideology of all Soviet Union was atheistic. And the Ukrainian Soviet Republic was the example of a militant atheism.
That’s why it is not right to consider that the country was an Orthodox one in the beginning of nineties as many people like to contend that Ukraine is a traditionally Orthodox country.
It is right to say that from 1991 the atheistic society started to turn into the religious society again. It is true that Orthodox religion was the state religion in Ukraine as well as in all Russian empire till 1971. And having such a status, influence and power, the Orthodox Church should recognize its inability to form Christian consciousness in society and plan the principles of God’s Kingdom, Christian values and morality in the society of that time.
It appeared during the public opinion polls that the majority was not just ignorant in faith questions but in the state of paganism. The unbelievers only could believe in atheism and submit to this ideology. And this is a historic fact. It was not very difficult for the leaders of the Communist Pasty to write a new thinking in the minds and hearts of people from the scratch.
Thus, as the Embassy of God Church appeared in the spiritual vacuum of the atheistic society of Ukraine, it is not correct to call it a not-traditional one. All religions and religious institutions are not-traditional for atheism.
That’s why The Embassy of God Church is equal to other churches that were underground during the Soviet times and those that cooperated with the authorities and those that appeared thanked to the freedom of speech.
The next one. It is ignorant, unethical and it is a crime to call God Embassy Christian Church a destructive totalitarian sect. This church belongs to the Protestants which is the second largest Christian denomination after the Catholics. But there are only 4 per cent of the Christians of the world that consider themselves Orthodox.
It is important to note that the protestant countries are the most developed in the world. And if this Christianity has such an effect, than it is good for Ukraine to have this “sectarianism”.
And if The Embassy of God Church is a destructive force, it is only destructive towards drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, fatherlessness, criminality, corruption, ignorance, and other negative and pernicious things that are rooted in the “traditional orthodox society”.
“Totalitarianism” of The Embassy of God Church is revealed in its ability to mobilize the citizens of Ukraine for good works that are seen in the volunteer activity of the church members in different social and public projects. Some of these projects have acquired national and international scale.
For example one of them is the all-Ukrainian social movement against drugs and drug-corruption. It has brought more use for the Ukrainian society than the work of all profile departments of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine, and prevented the activity of the drug dealing within the country. Thanks to this Movement, Tramadol medicine that kills the health of the young people was acknowledged as a drug. The production and free disposal of this drug was stopped. Millions of parents can now thank “the sectarians” of God Embassy Church that their children won’t become drug addicts because of ex facte innocent pharmacy stores.
The main activity of The Embassy of God Church is ministering its nation in the following directions:
1. Biblical education. It is known that it is impossible to become a real Christian without the deep knowledge of the Word of God. Special attention is given to studying the Bible in the church. The purpose of the church is to train people to work independently with the original sources of Christianity.
2. Prayer also takes a special place in the church life. But people are taught to pray not only for the solution of their problems, but motivate them to pray for the government, for the people, for the well-being of the country. And even on this level the church cultivates patriotism in its members and personal responsibility for what is going on in the country.
3. Social work. Church members are being taught that they have calling from God and the potential they need to realize through the social ministry to their fellow citizens. This is carried out in different forms and for different levels of the population. Every one of 200 social ministries in the church is oriented to the solution of the concrete problems and has the main purpose: to restore personality and transform society. Great social effect and the benefit of the God Embassy Church activity is obvious. For example there are about 5,000 healed alcoholics and drug addicts in The Embassy of God, which means that the church prevented a lot of murders, street assaults, robberies, imprisonments. Now these people are not dangerous for the society any more, they become patriots, find jobs, create families.
4. Economic work. As it is known, thanked to the international influence of God Embassy (700 branches in 35 countries) there are thousands of guests from more than 30 countries that come to the anniversaries and conferences of the church every year. Besides there are guests that come every week just to get acquainted with the church activity. When these thousands of people arrive they surely live in the hotels, buy souvenirs, food, etc. It is indisputable that the tourists leave hundred thousands dollars in our country, which has a positive effect on the state of the national budget. It improves because Ukraine has become known in the world as a tourist Mecca thanks to the activity of God Embassy.
Our people were historically brought up as a grey faceless mass, but the Embassy of God Church raises personalities out of this mass through its spiritual work. For instance in 2008 only there were opened more than 700 private enterprises. People stop living by the state subsidies and become active participants of the economic life of the country. And it is undisputable that there’s a big service of The Embassy of God in this.
For example the state spends several thousand ghrivnas per one drug addict every year – for salaries and keeping the correctional institutions, law enforcement agencies, etc. Because these people are not only workless, they commit thefts, robberies and other crimes.
It is a confirmed fact that there are 5,000 drug addicts and alcoholics were healed in The Embassy of God Church. Now calculate and multiply thousand of ghrivnas that the state would spend for these 5,000 people. This is the economic effect from the work of God Embassy. These people were not only healed, they stopped being the danger for society. People who had been socially dangerous before were rehabilitated and open their own companies, give jobs, sustain their families.
It is difficult to overestimate the positive contribution of God Embassy Church analyzing the economic benefits of its activity.
5.Education and enlightening activity. The church has a wide spectrum of activities here: from teaching how to build a family, obtain soul harmony to the development of all skills and talents. Different schools, seminars and trainings fill the need in education. And the church is preparing its disciples to the professional activity in different spheres.
6. Public activity. The church is teaching that Christianity is not running away from the social problems but vise versa it is acquiring an active social position. “Church without walls” is one of the doctrines of The Embassy of God.
People are called from the church pulpit to be in the center and not on the roadside of solving social problems. In the church people begin to understand finally that serving in the army or the police is normal; participating in the elections as a voter or a candidate is not only the right but the obligation, etc.
Organizing different social movements is a norm for the members of God Embassy Church. That’s why active role in the process of social democratization is a norm for all church members. Protest actions of many thousand people “Against the popularization of homosexuality and sexual perversions, Sodom’s sin”, “Against racism and xenophobia”, “For solving the problems of the investors and borrowers of the banks” are only a small part of the great work the church is doing for the good of Ukraine.
It is a well-known fact that the Internal Ministry of Ukraine gave 9 rewards to the activists of the Church “For the struggle against the drug dealing”.
In general it has become obvious that the criminogenic situation in Ukraine has been improved.
7. Charity. The church has a lot of projects in this direction, but the most famous is Stephaniya charitable soup kitchen. This kind of activity in the church is not the purpose itself but is a means to touch the needy and help them to change their lives radically, stop being the burden for the country and become the respectable citizens.
8. Culture and arts. There are some theatres and theatre groups in the church. Davir music college for many years has been giving the chance to receive music education to any citizen of Ukraine. There are also exhibitions of pictures, photos, literary activity, film studios in the church that enable simple people to realize themselves. And the participation in these activities does not oblige people to go to the services of God Embassy Church.
9. Sport. Different sport clubs were organized thanks to the members of God Embassy Church. They cultivate the health lifestyle in the young generation. Football and boxing are among the most popular sports. Sabona football club played in the major league of Kiev oblast (province) and was created by the member of God Embassy Church. It is also trying to carry out the commission of Jesus Christ in other directions: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.” (Matthew 28:19,20)
God can judge if the church is doing it good or bad, but the main thing is that The Embassy of God Church is doing its best to carry out this commission. And it is fact!
Those who do nothing for the development of the Christianity can only create myths and creepy stories for the credulous and ignorant people. The fruit will always discredit the fruitless.
So for today the Embassy of God Church opened 700 branches in 35 countries. There are 217 acting rehabilitation centers that helped 5 thousand people to obtain freedom from alcoholism and drug addiction. There are 600 social organizations and charitable funds, 105 educational institutions. Social work is being carried out in 26 educational institutions reaching 170 thousand people. The church is working with 108 orphanages and boarding schools, reaching 170 thousand children. The church is ministering in 35 nursing homes helping 65 thousand elderly people constantly. The church helps in 27 hospitals, embracing up to 30 thousand people. The churches are opened in 30 prisons, counting more than 10 thousand members. The Embassy of God Church touches the lives of more than a million people daily through its activity, and more than 5 million people personally every year.
This is the result for the fifteen years despite the lack of support from the state authorities.
In 2002 Pastor Sunday was awarded with GOLDEN FORTUNA International Award. The International Academy of the Spiritual Unity of Nations under the UN bestowed him an honorable title of Academician, gave him the diploma and the badge. In the “Ukraine 2002” encyclopedia “Spirituality” paragraph starts with the article about Sunday Adelaja. The International Committee of the Human Right Protection bestowed Pastor Sunday an honorable title of Human Rights Protector.
Road of Life African magazine called Pastor Sunday The Man of the Year and in 2004 he was invited to Nigeria by the President of his motherland.
In May 2005 Pastor Sunday was invited to the meeting with the government of Israel being one of the most influential people of the evangelic world.
In April 2009 as the revolutionary leader of the Christian world he was given the prestigious Azusa Street Award. Pastor Sunday Adelaja is the second man in history who received this reward. Another remarkable reward was given to Pastor Sunday by the Nigerian organization called Ijebu Professional Excellence Promotion Body. This reward is being given to the sons and daughters of Idjebu (South-West of Nigeria) who became professionals and prominent people in the chosen by them sphere of activity.
Among the special is the reward received by Pastor in May 14th, 2009 from the Social organization called “Life Without Excuses”. People who became the invalids in the result of using the synthetic drugs thanked Pastor Sunday and his faithful followers Nataliya Potopaeva and Roman Trohin that they were not afraid to stand for the salvation of their souls.
May be, people call The Embassy of God Church a sect because it was founded by a foreigner. Than all other churches may be called like this. Because in fact the Orthodox faith was brought to Ukraine from the ancient Palestine and not from the Ukrainians.
What can we say than about the Orthodox church of Moscow Patriarchate? And although we live in Kyiv and not in Moscow this church swore to be faithful to its country. And this church is not the only one. The same concerns Greek Catholic Church. Even the name of this church testifies about this. Although all these churches announce openly that they are faithful to their countries and were founded by the foreigners, the Ukrainians as a progressive nation are tolerant towards them. So how do they differ from the Embassy of God Church? There is no difference.
Speaking about the Embassy of God it is known that his church never announced faithfulness to any other country but Ukraine, and Pastor Sunday sees himself as a Ukrainian preacher.
On the other hand, people who think progressively understand that our authorities should have seen a great positive for Ukraine of having the largest charismatic church in Eastern Europe. It is also a wonderful stimulus and confirmation of Ukraine’s tolerance. Therewith, the Embassy of God Church is not the church of Pastor Sunday, but the church of believers - Ukrainian Protestants. It is not a secret that 99.9% of church members are Ukrainians so it is impossible to consider it as a sect or a foreign church. For today 2,500,000 people received Jesus in their hearts in God Embassy Church. And the Embassy of God church counts 100,000 members in Ukraine only. It is obvious that the parishioners choose the Embassy of God Church for several reasons: 1) preaching the Gospel, and people are thirsty for the Word of God and seek God; 2) spiritual education and teaching people how to pray; 3) solving people’s problems; 4) supernatural miracles: healings from the oncological diseases, delivery from alcoholism and drug addiction, family restoration, etc.; 5) real help and support to every person; 6) vivid and charismatic pastor; 7) participation in social work for the good of society, where people can realize their dreams; 8) pleasant and friendly atmosphere.
